Animal Crossing: Wild World Fish Guide
The first step to catching a fish is to purchase a fishing rod from Tom Nook. It costs 500 bells, and you'll need to make sure you have an empty space in your pocket before purchasing it. He will not always have one in stock, so it may be a few days before you are able to obtain a fishing rod. He changes his item stock every day.

Tom Nook will explain how to use your fishing rod when you purchase it, but here is how you use it. To use your fishing rod, just grab hold of it on your item screen by using your controller to scroll around until you get to the rod, and pressing the A button to select it. Then scroll once more until you get to the little picture of you, and press A to put it in your hands. When you walk outside, you should be holding it. Then, walk up to a pond, river, or the ocean to catch a fish. Never run when trying to catch a fish. This will always scare any fish away, and you will not be able to catch them! To catch a fish, you simply press the A Button to cast into the water, making sure you aim carefully. If you are not facing the water, the game will not let you cast. Also, do not cast in random places. You will see a shadow of a fish in the water, depending on its size the shadow may be bigger or smaller. You will only catch a fish if you cast near these shadows!

If you are casting in a pond, you just want to get in the general area of the fish, and it should see it and nibble. Make sure that when you cast, the bobber is not too far away, or the fish might not find the bait.

If you are casting in the ocean, you should cast in the direction of the fish, but the bobber should go a little beyond it. This is because the current will carry it towards shore, and if you cast to the left, right, or in front of the fish, the bobber may be carried away before the fish has time to catch the bait. If you cannot get the bobber out far enough, you can try casting from land instead of the shore if there is land nearby.

If you are casting in the river, you will want to cast far upstream (north) because there is a very swift current that will carry your bobber quickly downstream. If you cast it next to our downstream from the fish, there is a very small chance that the fish will see the bait and bite at it.

You will know when the fish is nibbling because your bobber will get tugged at and there will be a few small splashes. Do not hit the A Button yet! The fish is only nibbling, and if you hit the A Button the fish will be scared away and you will not have caught it. You do hit the A Button when your bobber goes up and down and little white drops of water are splashed around on the screen. If you hit it fast enough, you will have caughten your first fish! If you do not hit it fast enough, don't worry, there will always be another fish, just keep walking around and you should see another shadow in no time. :)
