Animal Crossing (GameCube) Bug Guide
The first step to catching a bug is to purchase a net from Tom Nook's shop. It costs 500 bells, and you'll need to make sure you have an empty space in your pocket before purchasing it. He will not always have one in stock, so it may be a few days before you are able to obtain a net. He changes his item stock every day.

Tom Nook will explain how to use the net when you buy it from him, but here is how you use it. After purchasing the net from Tom Nook, you need to equip it. To do this, enter your item screen with the Y button and scroll around until the finger is pointing to the picture of the net. Select it with the A Button. Next, scroll over to the small picture of you and hit the A Button again when the finger lands on the picture. When you go outside, you should be holding your net.
The most important thing to do when catching a bug on land or on a tree is to sneak. You can sneak by holding down the A Button. Simply hitting the A Button will swing the net, and will not allow you to sneak. Also, you can only sneak within an acre, so you cannot cross acres while you are sneaking. If you accidentally start to sneak in the wrong acre, try moving away from the bug and releasing the A Button there, so you don't disturb it. When you come up to the bug you'd like to catch, make sure you are close enough but not too close, and release the A Button. If you were in the right spot, you will catch a bug! When catching a bug on the tree, the space in between you and the tree should be a little more than the size of a person.

When catching a bug that is moving in the air, you do not want to sneak. Instead, you want to walk as quickly as possible with your net equipped. When you are directly facing the bug and are close to it, swing your net and you will catch it! For some people, it takes a little while to get the hang of this, but it will be easy once you try it a few times.
I would also suggest keeping the volume up on your TV. Some bugs, like cicidas, make a unique sound when they are in the game, and you can locate them by listening to their noise! If you hunt bugs often enough, you will be able to recognize each bug that makes a noise by their sound.
Below I have provided a list of the name of every bug, the price they sell for, their location, time available, months available, and for some the peak times and months, in that order. This list is in alphabetical order.
